Rider Requirements

Bountiful Mountain Bike Team is a community of riders passionate about adventure, growth, and competition.

Becoming a Bountiful Mountain Bike Team Rider

We’re excited that you’re interested in joining the Bountiful Mountain Bike Team!

Our program welcomes middle and high school students of all skill levels — whether you’re brand new to mountain biking or ready to compete in races.

To keep our team safe, organized, and competitive, all riders are expected to meet the following requirements throughout the season.

Equipments

Mountain Bike

The core of your riding experience — your bike must be reliable, safe, and suited for mountain terrain.

  • Type: A mountain bike (not a road or hybrid bike) with front suspension is required.
  • Gears: A bike with multiple gears for climbing and descending trails.
  • Brakes: Must have working front and rear brakes — disc brakes are strongly recommended.
  • Tires: Knobby tires in good condition with proper tread for dirt trails.

Helmet

The most important piece of safety equipment — helmets are mandatory anytime a rider is on a bike.

  • Must be a CPSC-approved cycling helmet (look for the safety sticker inside).
  • Should fit snugly and sit level on the head — not tilted back or forward.
  • Straps must be adjusted and buckled at all times while riding.
  • Inspect for cracks or damage; replace any helmet that has been involved in a crash.

Tool Bag (Bike Repair Kit)

To help riders handle small mechanical issues during rides or races.

  • Spare inner tube (correct size for your tires)
  • Tire levers
  • Mini pump or COâ‚‚ inflator
  • Multi-tool (Allen wrenches, chain breaker, etc.)
  • Small first-aid kit (optional but helpful)

Clothing & Shoes

Proper riding apparel improves comfort, safety, and team unity.

  • Team Jersey & Bib Shorts: Worn for all races and official team events.
  • Padded Shorts or Bibs: For training rides.
  • Gloves: For grip, comfort, and hand protection.
  • Eye Protection: Clear or tinted cycling glasses to shield eyes from dust and debris.
  • Shoes:
Beginner riders: Flat-soled athletic shoes with good traction.
  • Advanced riders: Clip-in (SPD) mountain bike shoes if comfortable using pedals with clips.
  • Weather Gear: Lightweight rain jacket, arm/leg warmers, or layers for cooler conditions.

Food & Water

Riders must stay hydrated and fueled, especially on longer rides or during races.

  • Hydration:
Carry a hydration pack (CamelBak-style) or two water bottles on your bike.
  • Nutrition:
Pack energy snacks such as granola bars, fruit snacks, or gels.
  • Avoid heavy or sugary foods before riding.
  • Timing:
Eat a light meal 1–2 hours before practice or a race.

Skills & Minor Mechanical Knowledge

To help riders become confident and self-sufficient on the trail.

  • Know how to perform a basic bike safety check before each ride.

Understand how to:

  • Inflate tires and check air pressure.
  • Reattach a slipped chain.
  • Fix a flat tire with your repair kit.
  • Adjust seat height.

Follow coach instruction on proper trail etiquette and riding safety.

Practice Attendance & Race Participation

Being part of the Bountiful Mountain Bike Team means showing commitment to your teammates, coaches, and personal growth.

Regular practice and participation help riders build skills, confidence, and team spirit throughout the season.

Practice Attendance

  • Riders must attend at least 75% of team practices to be considered race eligible.
  • Practices are typically held 3–4 times per week from June through August, with additional race weekends in the fall.
  • Riders are expected to communicate with their group coach in advance if they’ll miss a practice.

Race Participation

  • Racing is encouraged but not required — every rider can participate at their own pace and comfort level.
  • Junior Development (7th–8th Grade): 3 regional races
  • High School (9th–12th Grade): 5 total races — 3 regional, 1 regional championship, and 1 state championship (for qualifiers)
  • Note: Riders must attend 100% of scheduled races to qualify for the State Championships.
